Full Title The Lord is my Shepherd (theme from The Vicar of Dibley) by Howard Goodall (b. 1958)

Notes This is instantly recognisable as TV music, but the lilting tune is beautifully crafted by composer Howard Goodall to reflect the words of the 23rd psalm.

The composer hoped that, in writing the theme, he would also be creating a piece of church music which would have a life of its own beyond the series. This has certainly been fulfilled.

Duration depends. The choral version takes about three minutes. As a solo song about 2 minutes.

Performers required

  • Solo singer accompanied by Organ or Piano,
  • Mixed Voice Choir accompanied by Organ or Piano
  • Upper Voice Choir accompanied by Organ or Piano

The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want;
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil;
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the
Lord forever.
