The preface to the sheet music has the following note: "Henry and Louisa Brown of Higham House, Blackheath were lifelong friends of the Gounod family; and their daughter Agnes studied music with Gounod.
"Later, on the occasion of Agnes Brown's marriage to Peter Greenall or Grappenhall Hall, Warrington, on the 21st June 1882, Charles Gounod composed this Marche Nuptiale for organ solo, which he inscribed to the bride as a wedding gift. THe score has been in the possession of her grandson and not previously published."
